Inputs
Payroll cutoff date
The last day of work or transactions counted toward the pay period being processed.
Processing days before pay date
How many days pass between the cutoff and the pay date, as set by your employer or payroll provider.
Count using (calendar or business days)
Whether processing days are counted as every calendar day or only business days (Monday–Friday, optionally excluding US federal holidays).
Adjustment direction
If the cutoff or resulting pay date falls on a weekend or excluded holiday, whether to use the nearest working day before or after it.
Exclude US federal holidays
In business-day mode, also skips a standard list of US federal holidays when counting processing days.
How the calculation works
The calculator first checks whether the cutoff date itself falls on a weekend or an excluded holiday. If it does, payroll closes on the nearest working day before or after it instead, using the chosen adjustment direction.
The pay date is that effective cutoff date plus the processing days, using the same shared addDays/addBusinessDays logic as the Add Business Days To Date Calculator. If that pay date also falls on a weekend or holiday, it shifts the same way.
Business-day mode and the US federal holiday option use the same shared rules as the Notice Period and Business Day Offset calculators, so results stay consistent across DateToolsHQ.
Worked example
Payroll cutoff date: Saturday 15 March 2025. Processing days: 3, calendar days. Adjustment: nearest working day before.
15 March 2025 is a Saturday, so the effective cutoff shifts to the nearest working day before it: Friday 14 March 2025.
Pay date: 14 March + 3 calendar days = Monday 17 March 2025 (already a working day, so no further adjustment applies).
If processing days were counted in business days instead, 3 business days forward from 14 March lands on Wednesday 19 March 2025—later, because weekends are skipped rather than counted.
Edge cases
Both cutoff and pay date fall on non-working days
The adjustment is applied twice, independently: once to the cutoff date before adding processing days, and once to the resulting pay date afterward.
Zero processing days
With processing days set to 0, the pay date equals the (possibly adjusted) effective cutoff date directly—useful for same-day or next-business-day payroll setups.
Holiday exclusion only applies in business-day mode
In calendar-day mode, holidays are counted like any other day for processing days. The holiday exclusion option only affects business-day counting.
'Before' vs 'after' near a long weekend
Around a three-day weekend, 'before' and 'after' adjustments can land several calendar days apart. Confirm which direction your payroll provider actually uses before relying on the result.

FAQ
- What is a payroll cutoff date?
- The last day of work or transactions counted toward a pay period. After the cutoff, payroll is processed and a pay date is issued some number of days later.
- How do I calculate my pay date from a cutoff date?
- Enter the cutoff date and how many processing days your employer or payroll provider uses. The calculator adds that many days and adjusts both the cutoff and pay date off weekends or holidays.
- Why does the cutoff date itself get adjusted?
- If payroll cannot actually close on a weekend or holiday, the effective cutoff shifts to the nearest working day first—then processing days are added from that adjusted date, not the original one.
- Should I use calendar or business days for processing?
- Match whichever your payroll provider states. Many providers quote a fixed number of business days for processing turnaround; some smaller employers use calendar days informally.
- Is this my employer's actual payroll schedule?
- No. Payroll cutoff and pay date rules vary by employer and payroll provider. Use this for planning and confirm with your payroll department.
