How the calculation works

Enter the contract end date and the renewal or cancellation notice period your agreement requires. The calculator works backward from the end date using the same calendar-day, business-day, and month rules as the Notice Period Calculator—just in reverse, like the Resignation Notice Calculator.

Many contracts auto-renew unless you give notice a set number of days, weeks, or months before the end date. This calculator finds that exact deadline so you don't miss it.

Calendar mode counts every UTC calendar day backward from the end date. Business-day mode skips weekends and can optionally skip a sample US federal holiday list, matching the Add/Subtract Business Days calculators.

Worked example

Contract end date: 31 December 2025. Notice period: 60 days, calendar days, end date not counted.

The calculator subtracts 60 calendar days from 31 December 2025 (not counting 31 December itself). Deadline to give notice: 1 November 2025.

You must submit cancellation or renewal notice on or before 1 November 2025 to prevent the contract from auto-renewing on 31 December.

If the same clause instead specified 60 business days, the deadline would fall earlier in calendar time—since business-day mode skips weekends during the backward count, reaching further back than 60 calendar days would.

Edge cases

  • Deadline falls on a weekend

    The calculated deadline is not automatically adjusted onto a working day. If it falls on a Saturday or Sunday and notice must be received by a business, plan to send it by the preceding business day to be safe.

  • Month-based notice periods

    A notice period stated in months (for example, "90 days" written as "three months" in some agreements) subtracts calendar months with end-of-month clamping—confirm which unit your contract actually uses, since 90 days and three months rarely land on the same date.

  • Include end date is on

    With this on, the contract end date itself counts as the final day of the notice window, shifting the deadline one day earlier than when it's off.

  • Multiple renewal windows

    Some contracts define a notice window relative to each renewal term's own end date, not just the original end date. Re-run the calculator with the upcoming renewal term's end date if the contract has already auto-renewed once.
