How the calculation works

The retirement date is found by adding the target retirement age (in years) to the date of birth using calendar-month math. The result is the calendar date on which you turn that age—your birthday in the retirement year.

Current age uses the same engine as the Age Calculator: full calendar years from birth to today, then remaining months and days. Time remaining to retirement is the span from today to the retirement date.

If the retirement date is already in the past, the calculator reports how long ago you reached that age rather than a countdown.

February 29 birthdays are handled by using February 28 as the retirement date in non-leap years (the same convention used by the Age Calculator and most administrative systems).

Worked example

Date of birth: 15 June 1970. Target retirement age: 65.

Retirement date: 15 June 2035 (exactly 65 years after birth).

As of 1 July 2025: current age is 55 years and 16 days.

Time remaining until retirement: 9 years, 11 months, 14 days.

To coordinate with an employer: use the Resignation Notice Calculator with 15 June 2035 as the target last working day and a three-month notice period to find that notice must be given by 15 March 2035.

Edge cases

  • 29 February birthdays

    In years where February has only 28 days, the retirement date is 28 February. In leap years, it is correctly 29 February. This follows standard administrative practice for leap-day birthdays.

  • Retirement date already passed

    If you have already reached the target retirement age, the calculator shows how long ago that birthday occurred rather than a future countdown.

  • Different retirement ages for different purposes

    State pension age, employer pension normal retirement age, and personal retirement target may all differ. Run the calculation separately for each age to compare dates.

  • Part-year working before retirement

    If you plan to reduce hours before fully retiring, use the Employment Duration Calculator with a chosen part-time end date rather than the retirement date to measure that service span.

  • Jurisdiction variations
