Next step: Joining Date Calculator
When to use this calculator
Use this calculator to confirm the probation end date stated in an offer letter, to schedule a review meeting, or to determine when benefits and entitlements that vest after probation become active.
Probation review scheduling
Find the exact date a three-month or six-month probation period ends so the review can be booked in advance.
Offer letter verification
Confirm the probation end date printed in an offer letter or employment contract matches the calculation.
Benefits eligibility
Determine the date from which pension contributions, health cover, or other post-probation benefits begin.
Mid-probation check-in planning
Calculate the halfway point to schedule an informal progress conversation before the formal review.
Inputs
Joining date
The employee's first working day. This is the date the probation period starts from.
Probation length
The numeric value from the employment contract: for example, 3, 6, or 12.
Unit (days, weeks, or months)
The time unit that matches the contract. Most probation clauses use months; some use calendar days or weeks.
Calendar or business days
Calendar days count every day of the week. Business days skip Saturday and Sunday—and optionally US federal holidays.
Exclude US federal holidays
In business-day mode, skips listed US federal holidays from the probation count. Only relevant if your policy explicitly excludes holidays from probation.
Include joining date
When on, the joining date is counted as day one of the probation period. When off, the period begins the following day. Check the contract wording to determine which applies.
How the calculation works
The calculation uses the same date-forward logic as the Notice Period Calculator, applied to a joining date and probation length instead of a notice start and notice length.
For days and weeks, the calculator adds the equivalent number of calendar or business days forward from the joining date. For months—the most common probation unit—it adds the count directly to the month component of the joining date and clamps to the last day of the resulting month when the joining day falls beyond month-end.
The include-joining-date setting works identically to the include-start-date option in the Notice Period Calculator: with it on, the joining date is day one; with it off, the period begins the following day and the end date is one day later.
Worked example
Joining date: Monday 3 March 2025. Probation: 3 months, calendar, joining date not counted.
The calculator adds three calendar months to 3 March 2025 (not counting 3 March itself). Result: Tuesday 3 June 2025.
A review meeting should be booked for 3 June or shortly before. If the joining date were counted as day one, the end date would be one day earlier: Monday 2 June 2025.
For a six-month probation from the same joining date: 3 September 2025.
Edge cases
Joining at month-end
Joining on 31 October with a three-month probation gives 31 January (January has 31 days). Joining on 31 August gives 30 November (November has only 30 days—end-of-month clamping applies).
Probation end date on a weekend
A calendar-month probation can end on a Saturday or Sunday. The calculator does not adjust this; schedule the review on the nearest weekday before or after.
Include joining date is on
With this on, a three-month probation from 3 March ends on 2 June rather than 3 June—one day earlier because the joining date itself counts.
Business-day probation
A three-month business-day probation is uncommon but supported. The end date will be later in calendar time than a three-calendar-month probation because weekends are skipped during the count.
Extended probation
If a probation period is formally extended, re-enter the extension start date and new length to find the revised end date. The calculator does not retain or combine previous probation spans.
FAQ
- How do I calculate a probation end date?
- Enter the joining date, the probation length, and the unit (days, weeks, or months). Choose calendar or business days and whether the joining date counts as day one. The calculator shows the probation end date.
- What is the most common probation period length?
- Three months and six months are the most common in employment contracts, typically measured in calendar months. Some roles use 90 calendar days or 12 months. Use the unit your contract states.
- How is this different from the Notice Period Calculator?
- Same underlying date math—a start date plus a length in calendar or business days—applied to a joining date and probation length rather than a notice start and notice length.
- What happens if the end date falls on a public holiday?
- In calendar-day mode, the end date stands as calculated. In business-day mode with the holiday exclusion on, holidays are skipped during the count. If you need the review on a working day regardless, schedule it for the nearest weekday.
- Is this legal or HR advice?
- No. Probation rules vary by jurisdiction, contract, and company policy. Use this date for planning and confirm with your employment contract, HR team, or a qualified advisor.
