Notice periods depend on contracts, employment policies, and local laws. This is a planning date, not legal advice — confirm it against your agreement.

Next step: Notice Period Calculator

When to use this calculator

Use this calculator when you already know the day you want to leave and need to work out the resignation deadline. It is the reverse of the Notice Period Calculator: you fix the end and find the start.

  • Resignation letter timing

Find the exact date to submit your letter to leave by a chosen last working day.

  • New job coordination

Confirm the resignation deadline needed to align your notice period with a new employer's start date.

  • Annual leave planning

Work backward from a target date when part of your notice will be served as holiday.

  • Contract notice deadlines

Pair with the Contract End Date Calculator when a notice clause is tied to a fixed termination date.

Inputs

  • Target last working day

The day you want to stop working. This is the date the calculator works backward from.

  • Notice period length

The numeric value from your contract or policy.

  • Unit (days, weeks, or months)

The time unit that matches your contract. Months subtract calendar months with end-of-month clamping.

  • Calendar or business days

Calendar days count every day; business days skip Saturday and Sunday—and optionally US federal holidays.

  • Exclude US federal holidays

In business-day mode, skips a standard list of US federal holidays from the backward count.

  • Include last working day

When on, the target last working day is counted as the final day of the notice period. When off, the notice period ends the day before the target. Match this to your contract wording.

How the calculation works

The calculator subtracts the notice length backward from the target last working day, using the same rules as the Notice Period Calculator in reverse.

For calendar days, it counts back the exact number of days. For weeks, it counts back the equivalent number of days (7 per week in calendar mode; 5 business days per week in business-day mode). For months, it subtracts calendar months with end-of-month clamping.

In business-day mode, weekends are skipped during the backward count. With the holiday exclusion on, US federal holidays are also skipped—the resignation deadline falls further back in calendar time as a result.

The include-last-working-day setting mirrors the Notice Period Calculator's include-start-date option: with it off, the target day is not counted toward the notice length, so the resignation deadline is one day earlier.

Worked example

Target last working day: Friday 25 July 2025. Notice period: 4 weeks, calendar days, last working day not counted.

The calculator subtracts 28 calendar days from 25 July 2025 (not counting 25 July itself). Result: Friday 27 June 2025.

You must submit your resignation on or before Friday 27 June 2025 to leave by Friday 25 July 2025.

If the same notice were in business-day mode (20 business days backward from 25 July, skipping 4 weekends), the deadline would be Friday 27 June 2025 as well—but this coincidence does not always hold. Verify with your specific dates.

Edge cases

  • Resignation deadline on a weekend

The calculator does not automatically adjust the resignation deadline to a working day. If the result falls on a Saturday or Sunday, you would typically need to give notice on the preceding Friday to be certain it is received in time.

  • Month-end target dates

Subtracting months from a target date on the last day of a long month can clamp to an earlier month's end. For example, leaving on 31 March and subtracting two months gives 30 January rather than the 31st.

  • Business days vs calendar days

A four-week calendar notice gives a deadline 28 days back. A four-week business-day notice gives a deadline 20 business days back—roughly 28 calendar days but potentially longer if holidays are excluded. The difference matters most for short notice periods.

  • Include last working day is on

With this on, the target last working day counts as day one of the notice period backward. A two-week notice leaving on 25 July with the option on gives a deadline of 12 July; with it off, the deadline is 11 July.

  • Notice period longer than tenure

The calculator does not check whether you have been employed long enough to serve the stated notice period. Confirm statutory minimum notice with your employer or advisor.

FAQ

How do I calculate when I need to resign?
Enter the last working day you want and your notice period length and unit. The calculator subtracts that length backward from your target date and shows the resignation deadline.
How is this different from the Notice Period Calculator?
The Notice Period Calculator starts from a known notice date and calculates forward to find the end date. This calculator starts from a target last working day and calculates backward to find when notice must be given.
What if my resignation deadline falls on a bank holiday?
The calculator shows the raw deadline without adjusting for holidays unless business-day mode is used with the holiday exclusion on. If the deadline falls on a non-working day, plan to give notice on the preceding working day.
Are weekends and holidays handled the same way as the Notice Period Calculator?
Yes. Business-day mode skips weekends and can exclude the same sample US federal holiday list used elsewhere on DateToolsHQ.
Is this legal or HR advice?
No. Notice requirements vary by jurisdiction, contract, and company policy. Use this date for planning and confirm with your employer, HR team, or a qualified advisor.

The Employment Milestones Guide covers the rest of the employment lifecycle—probation periods, length of service, joining dates between roles, and retirement or pension age dates—and explains which calculator fits each stage.

The Notice Period Calculator finds a notice end date from a start date and length in days, weeks, or months, with 7-, 14-, and 30-day planning reminders.

The Last Working Day Calculator takes that notice end date and adjusts it onto a real working day when it falls on a weekend or holiday.

The Resignation Notice Calculator works backward from a target last working day to find the deadline for handing in notice—use it when the end date is fixed and the start date is not.

The Probation End Date Calculator finds when a three-month, six-month, or custom probation period ends from a joining date, for scheduling formal reviews.

The Employment Duration Calculator finds exact length of service in years, months, and days from a joining date to today or a last day of employment—useful for tenure milestones, severance eligibility, and vesting checks.

The Joining Date Calculator adds a stated gap to a previous last working day and adjusts the result onto a working day, for offers that specify a gap rather than a fixed start date.

The Retirement Date Calculator adds a target retirement age to a date of birth to find the exact date that age is reached, alongside current age and time remaining.
