Last Working Day Calculator

Enter a notice start date and period length to find your actual last working day. If the calculated notice end date falls on a weekend or holiday, the calculator shifts it to the nearest working day before or after.

When to use this calculator

Use this calculator when you need to confirm your actual last day in the office rather than the raw notice end date. It is most useful when a calendar-day notice period might land on a weekend or public holiday.

  • Resignation planning

Confirm your real last day when a four-week notice ends on a Saturday.

  • HR offboarding

Schedule exit interviews and equipment returns on the adjusted last working day, not a non-working day.

  • Final pay timing

Pair with the Payroll Cutoff or Payroll Hours calculators when final pay depends on the last working day.

  • Benefits transition

Use the confirmed last working day to determine when employer-provided benefits end.

  • Joining date planning

Hand the result to the Joining Date Calculator to find the earliest working-day start at your next employer.

Inputs

  • Notice start date

The date notice was formally given. The same date used in the Notice Period Calculator.

  • Notice period length

The numeric value from your contract or policy.

  • Unit (days, weeks, or months)

Matches your contract. Months use calendar-month math with end-of-month clamping.

  • Calendar or business days

Determines how the notice end date is computed before the working-day adjustment is applied.

  • Exclude US federal holidays

In business-day mode, also skips a standard list of US federal holidays. Only relevant if your policy treats holidays as non-working days.

  • Include start date

Whether the notice start date counts as day one of the period.

  • Adjustment direction

When the notice end date falls on a weekend or holiday: 'Before' shifts to the last working day before it; 'After' shifts to the first working day after it. Employment contracts commonly use 'Before', but check your policy.

How the calculation works

The calculator first computes the notice end date using the same calendar-day, business-day, and month rules as the Notice Period Calculator.

It then checks whether that end date is a working day. Saturday and Sunday are always non-working. If the US holiday exclusion is on, listed federal holidays are also treated as non-working.

If the end date is already a working day, the result is unchanged. If it falls on a non-working day, the adjustment direction determines the result: 'Before' returns the latest working day at or before the notice end date; 'After' returns the earliest working day at or after it.

The adjustment never modifies the notice length itself—it only shifts the final date that falls outside working days.

Worked example

Notice start date: Thursday 26 June 2025. Notice period: 1 month, calendar days, start date not counted.

The calculator adds one calendar month: 26 June + 1 month = Saturday 26 July 2025.

26 July 2025 is a Saturday—not a working day.

Adjustment 'Before': last working day before 26 July is Friday 25 July 2025.

Adjustment 'After': first working day after 26 July is Monday 28 July 2025.

Edge cases

  • End date already a working day

No adjustment is made. The last working day equals the notice end date.

  • End date on a Sunday

'Before' shifts to Friday; 'After' shifts to Monday. The two results span a full weekend.

  • Holiday at month-end

If a US federal holiday falls on the computed notice end date and the holiday option is enabled, the adjustment applies on top of the weekend check.

  • Business-day notice period

When the notice period is counted in business days, the end date already skips weekends during the count. The working-day adjustment is still applied afterward in case the result coincidentally lands on an excluded holiday.

  • Month-end clamping

A one-month notice starting 31 January produces 28 February in non-leap years. If 28 February is a non-working day, the adjustment then applies to that clamped date.

FAQ

What is a last working day?
The last actual working day of employment after notice, adjusted so it never falls on a weekend or an excluded holiday—unlike a raw notice end date, which can land on any calendar day.
How is this different from the Notice Period Calculator?
The Notice Period Calculator shows the calendar end date of the notice period. This calculator takes that same end date and adjusts it to the nearest working day when it falls on a weekend or holiday.
Should I use 'before' or 'after'?
It depends on your employer's policy or contract. Many employment agreements treat the last working day as the closest working day before the notice end date. Others extend to the next working day after it. Check your agreement before relying on the result.
What if my notice end date is already a working day?
No adjustment is made—the last working day equals the notice end date directly.
Is this legal or HR advice?
No. Notice and offboarding rules vary by jurisdiction, contract, and company policy. Use this date for planning and confirm with your employer, HR team, or a qualified advisor.

The Notice Period Guide is the primary reference for how notice periods work across employment, contract, rental, and vendor scenarios, including calendar-vs-business-day rules and include-start-date conventions.

The Employment Milestones Guide covers the rest of the employment lifecycle—probation periods, length of service, joining dates between roles, and retirement or pension age dates—and explains which calculator fits each stage.

The Notice Period Calculator finds a notice end date from a start date and length in days, weeks, or months, with 7-, 14-, and 30-day planning reminders.

The Last Working Day Calculator takes that notice end date and adjusts it onto a real working day when it falls on a weekend or holiday.

The Resignation Notice Calculator works backward from a target last working day to find the deadline for handing in notice—use it when the end date is fixed and the start date is not.

The Probation End Date Calculator finds when a three-month, six-month, or custom probation period ends from a joining date, for scheduling formal reviews.

The Employment Duration Calculator finds exact length of service in years, months, and days from a joining date to today or a last day of employment—useful for tenure milestones, severance eligibility, and vesting checks.

The Joining Date Calculator adds a stated gap to a previous last working day and adjusts the result onto a working day, for offers that specify a gap rather than a fixed start date.

The Retirement Date Calculator adds a target retirement age to a date of birth to find the exact date that age is reached, alongside current age and time remaining.
