Next step: Last Working Day Calculator

When to use this calculator

Use this calculator when an offer letter gives a gap from your last working day rather than a fixed start date, or when you want to confirm that your intended joining date falls on an actual working day.

  • Offer letter with a gap

An offer says 'start two weeks after your last working day'—enter both and get the exact joining date.

  • Career break planning

Plan a one- or two-week break between jobs and confirm the resulting working-day start date.

  • Weekend or holiday avoidance

Catch cases where your intended joining date falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or public holiday before you commit to a date.

  • Onboarding coordination

Pass the confirmed joining date to the Employment Duration Calculator to track length of service from the first official day.

Inputs

  • Last working day

The final working day at your previous role. This is the reference date the gap is added to.

  • Gap length

The number of days, weeks, or months between leaving the previous role and starting the new one.

  • Unit (days, weeks, or months)

The time unit for the gap. Days and weeks add fixed increments; months use calendar-month math with end-of-month clamping.

  • Calendar or business days

Calendar days count every day of the week including weekends. Business days count only Monday to Friday—and optionally exclude US federal holidays.

  • Exclude US federal holidays

In business-day mode, skips listed US federal holidays from the gap count so the joining date falls on a non-holiday working day.

  • Adjustment direction

When the target joining date falls on a weekend or holiday: 'After' shifts to the next working day (most common—you do not start on a Saturday); 'Before' shifts to the preceding working day.

How the calculation works

The calculator adds the gap forward from the last working day using the same calendar-day, business-day, and month rules as the Notice Period Calculator.

It then applies a working-day adjustment using the same logic as the Last Working Day Calculator, but in the forward direction: if the target joining date falls on a weekend or excluded holiday, it shifts to the nearest working day according to the chosen adjustment direction.

In calendar-day mode, weekends count as gap days—a five-day gap from a Friday may land on a Wednesday. In business-day mode, weekends are skipped during the gap count, so five business days from a Friday lands on the following Friday.

Worked example

Last working day: Monday 4 August 2025. Gap: 5 calendar days.

The calculator adds 5 calendar days to 4 August: target joining date is Saturday 9 August 2025.

9 August is a Saturday—not a working day.

Adjustment 'After' (most common): joining date shifts to Monday 11 August 2025.

Adjustment 'Before': joining date would be Friday 8 August 2025.

In business-day mode with the same five-day gap: the five business days forward from Monday 4 August skip the weekend and land on Monday 11 August directly, with no adjustment needed.

Edge cases

  • Gap of zero days

A zero-day gap gives a target equal to the last working day itself. The adjustment then checks whether that date is a working day (it should be, since it was the last working day, but holidays may still apply).

  • Calendar vs business days for the same gap

A five-calendar-day gap from a Friday lands on a Wednesday; a five-business-day gap from a Friday lands on the following Friday. Choose the gap type that matches how the offer or break was described.

  • Long career break

For a gap of several months, use the months unit. Month-add math clamps to end-of-month when needed: a last working day on 31 October plus a three-month gap gives 31 January.

  • Public holiday joining date

If the target joining date falls on a US federal holiday and the holiday exclusion is on, the adjustment shifts it to the nearest non-holiday working day even if it was not a weekend.

  • Target already a working day

No adjustment is made. The joining date equals the gap target directly.

FAQ

How do I calculate my joining date?
Enter your last working day at a previous job and the gap length and unit before your new role starts. The calculator adds the gap forward and adjusts onto a working day if needed.
How is this different from the Last Working Day Calculator?
The Last Working Day Calculator finds the last working day before a notice end date (backward adjustment). This calculator finds the first working day after a gap from a last working day (forward adjustment).
Should I use calendar days or business days for the gap?
Use calendar days if the gap includes weekends as rest days (most career breaks). Use business days if the offer states 'two working weeks' or similar.
Is this an official joining date?
No. Offer letters and HR policies vary—use this for planning and confirm the official joining date with your new employer.
What if I want to start on a specific date?
If you already know the joining date, use the Employment Duration Calculator directly. The Joining Date Calculator is for when the start date is defined by a gap from a previous last working day.

The Notice Period Guide is the primary reference for how notice periods work across employment, contract, rental, and vendor scenarios, including calendar-vs-business-day rules and include-start-date conventions.

The Employment Milestones Guide covers the rest of the employment lifecycle—probation periods, length of service, joining dates between roles, and retirement or pension age dates—and explains which calculator fits each stage.

The Notice Period Calculator finds a notice end date from a start date and length in days, weeks, or months, with 7-, 14-, and 30-day planning reminders.

The Last Working Day Calculator takes that notice end date and adjusts it onto a real working day when it falls on a weekend or holiday.

The Resignation Notice Calculator works backward from a target last working day to find the deadline for handing in notice—use it when the end date is fixed and the start date is not.

The Probation End Date Calculator finds when a three-month, six-month, or custom probation period ends from a joining date, for scheduling formal reviews.

The Employment Duration Calculator finds exact length of service in years, months, and days from a joining date to today or a last day of employment—useful for tenure milestones, severance eligibility, and vesting checks.

The Joining Date Calculator adds a stated gap to a previous last working day and adjusts the result onto a working day, for offers that specify a gap rather than a fixed start date.

The Retirement Date Calculator adds a target retirement age to a date of birth to find the exact date that age is reached, alongside current age and time remaining.
