Next step: Joining Date Calculator
When to use this calculator
Use this calculator to find a precise length of service for any employment span, whether the role is current or historical. Useful whenever an HR policy, legal threshold, or award requires an exact duration rather than a rough year count.
Tenure milestones and awards
Find your exact years of service to confirm eligibility for a five-, ten-, or twenty-year recognition award.
Severance eligibility
Check whether length of service meets a policy's minimum tenure threshold—for example, two years for statutory redundancy.
Pension and benefits vesting
Determine whether you have passed a vesting cliff or milestone that triggers pension, equity, or benefit entitlements.
Resume and LinkedIn duration
Get an exact years-and-months figure for a role's duration rather than estimating from calendar years.
Retirement planning
Pair with the Retirement Date Calculator to plan length of service alongside a target retirement date.
Inputs
Joining date
The first calendar day of employment—the date in the offer letter or contract, not the first working day if they differ.
Last day of employment
The final calendar day of the role. Leave this as today to calculate duration for a current role; the result updates each day.
Include joining date
When on, the joining date is counted as day one. When off, the duration starts the following day. Match this to your HR policy or contract wording.
Include last day
When on, the last day of employment is included in the total. Many calculations include it; check your policy for severance or statutory rights.
How the calculation works
The calculator computes the calendar span between the joining date and the last day using the same engine as the Age Calculator and Date Duration Calculator.
Full calendar years are counted first. The remaining months are then counted as full calendar months within the final partial year. The remaining days are the calendar days left over after removing full months.
Total days is the raw count of calendar days between the two dates, adjusted by whether each boundary date is included or excluded. Total weeks is the total days divided by seven, rounded down.
For currently employed people, using today as the last day gives a live duration that updates each visit. This is not an official tenure record—it reflects the UTC calendar at the time the page loads.
Worked example
Joining date: Monday 3 March 2020. Last day: Friday 28 February 2025. Both boundary dates not counted.
From 3 March 2020 to 28 February 2025: four full calendar years (March 2020 to March 2024), then eleven calendar months (March to February), then twenty-five remaining days.
Result: 4 years, 11 months, 25 days.
Total calendar days: approximately 1,822 days (includes the 2020 and 2024 leap years). Total weeks: 260 complete weeks.
To check severance eligibility on a policy requiring five years: this employee has not yet completed five full years—they are five days short of the five-year mark on 3 March 2025.
Edge cases
Current role
Leave the last-day field as today. The duration increases by one day each calendar day and reflects the current UTC date at page load.
Leap year boundaries
Employment spans that cross 29 February gain one extra day compared to equivalent spans in non-leap years. A role from 1 March 2019 to 1 March 2021 includes one 29 February (2020); a role from 1 March 2021 to 1 March 2023 does not.
Include vs exclude boundary dates
Including both the joining date and the last day adds two extra days to the total relative to excluding both. Policies differ—check whether your employer counts the first day, the last day, or both.
Payroll vs calendar months
Some HR systems measure tenure in standardized 30-day months rather than real calendar months. The calculator uses real calendar months, which may differ slightly from HR system figures for spans crossing months of different lengths.
Probation and continuous service
The calculator counts from the joining date without interruption. If continuous service was broken by a gap and then restarted, calculate each span separately and add the results.
FAQ
- How do I calculate my length of service?
- Enter your joining date and either today's date or your last day of employment. The calculator shows the duration in years, months, and days, plus total days and weeks.
- What if I'm still employed?
- Leave the last-day field at today's date (the default). The result reflects your length of service so far and updates each time you reload the page.
- How is this different from the Date Duration Calculator?
- Same underlying date-span engine—no new math—framed for employment tenure: a joining date and a last day (or today) instead of generic start and end dates.
- Does the calculator account for breaks in employment?
- No. It calculates the span between two dates without interruption. If service was broken, calculate each period separately and combine the results manually.
- Can I use this for severance or statutory rights calculations?
- The result can be used as a reference for planning. For statutory redundancy, notice, or other legal entitlements, confirm the exact rules with an employment advisor or HR team—statutory calculations may use specific rounding or different boundary rules.
